Here follows
the complete entry for "Obi-Wan Kenobi," which covers
much of his earlier life. The entire entry is drawn only from
the films, the radio dramas, and the film novelizations.
"Ben
Kenobi was the hermit and recluse who lived by the Western Dune
Sea on the planet Tatooine. He was considered a crazy old man
by the locals, but in reality he was nothin gof the sort. For
Ben Kenobi once went by the name of Obi-Wan, and he erved the
Old Republic as a Jedi Knight. Kenboi studied under teh Jedi Master
Yoda, learning the ways of the Force. When the Clone Wars erupted,
Kenobi became a general, fighting alongside Bail Organa of Alderaan
and the young pilot Anakin Skywalker. Obi-Wan and Anakin became
good friends, sharing many adventures as they battled to protect
the galaxy. In fact, Kenobi recognized Anakin's natural Force
talents and decided to train him to be a Jedi. But Kenobi wasn't
experienced as a teacher, and Anakin was lured to the dark side.
Kenobi's pride had terrible consequences for the galaxy.
"Much
to Kenobi's horror, his friend and pupil was so corrupted by the
dark side of the Force that he became essentially a new person--Dark
Lord Darth Vader. When Kenobi saw what had become of Anakin, he
tried to dissuade him and draw him back from the dark side.
"According
to the Return of the Jedi novel, discussion turned to battle,
and the two fought fiercely. It ended when the man who had been
Anakin Skywalker fell into a pit of molten lava. After that, Kenobi
helped hide Anakin's children to protect them from the Emperor
and Vader.
"In
the years that followed, as Vader and the Emperor systematically
hunted down and destroyed the Jedi Knights, Kenobi remained in
hiding. He remained near Anakin's son, young Luke Skywalker, watching
over him and waiting for the moment when he would step in and
reveal the young man's destiny to him. The event that triggered
the beginning of this revelation was inspired by Anakin's other
child, Leia Organa. Leia's foster father told her to seek out
Kenobi if she ever was in dire need, and that was what she was
doing when the Empire captured her over Tatooine. Kenobi became
Luke's mentor and rotector, starting his training in the ways
of the Force.
"On
the Death Star, while Luke and Han Solo worked to rescue Princess
Leia, Kenobi faced Darth Vader for a final time. He sacraficed
his life to help Luke and to advance the cause of the Rebellion,
but his sacrafice was not the end. He became one with the Force,
a being of light who was much more than the crude matter of flesh
and bone. He continued to guide Luke even in death, giving him
support in desperate times, leading him to further training with
Yoda, and helping him prepare for his final confrontation with
Vader."

Comics #24, "Silent Drifting"
Published
by Marvel Comics Inc., Issue #24, June 1979
In this
issue, Leia recounts an episode from Obi-Wan's earlier life during
the Old Republic--a story that was told to her by her foster father,
Bail Organa. Of chief interest is the manner in which Obi-Wan
is dressed: mostly all black, save for white gloves and belt.

Obi-Wan;
though it was before the dark times,
dark was apparently in fashion.

The story
finds Obi-Wan passenger of a luxurious pleasure cruiser on its
way to Alderaan. He is referred to as "General" in the
story. Leia states that "...space was free to any ships that
passed by, so long as they travelled through
civilized systems...Dozens of races mingled there together, representing
every strata of their societies...their every extravagant pleasure
or vice catered to...to a criminal, barely escaping planetary
justice with his life and wealth...to a Jedi Knight, riding the
good ship because it happened to be going toward his destination."
Obi-Wan manages
to save the ship and its crew from attacking slavers by guiding
the ship with the Force. All power was shut down, but still the
slavers were able to track them. Obi-Wan discovered how they were
being tracked--microwave emanations from the drink machine. Once
the drink machine was destroyed, the pleasure cruiser was able
to escape without further attacks.
